I'm told that a product called "Blue Away" or "Blu Away", if applied with a cotton cloth and rubbed with lots of elbow grease, will remove the oxidation. When I bought my used '87 with 27K miles, the owner had used this product and the pipe was shiny as new. Cost is somewhere around US$9-14 I think. I'm going to pick some up from my local bike shop next weekend.
